EYA LEED Certification CeremonyLEED for Homes Awarded to EYA Townhomes
On April 22nd, Earth Day, the US Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded the Capitol Quarter by EYA LEED certification for what will soon be the nation's largest LEED for Homes for-sale neighborhood.  The plaque ceremony and luncheon were followed by demonstrations of inspections needed for certification, such as the air distribution check, blower door test to estimate leakage to the outside and thermal bypass inspection.  Capitol Quarter by EYA is a model of Smart Growth development, demonstrated in the re-use of a previously developed site, accessibility to parks, water efficiency, energy efficiency, and sustainable materials.  The first residents moved in last week to Capitol Quarter, the first of 323 townhomes and affordable rentals to be built in the Capitol Riverfront by EYA.Capitol Quarter Townhouses are LEED certified Capitol Quarter Townhouses are LEED certified
New Bike RacksArtistic Bike Rack Dedication
Join Mayor Adrian M. Fenty in a ceremony on Monday, April 27th at 2 pm to dedicate the district's 28 new artistic bike racks.  The project to create unique bike racks designed by 6 DC artists began as a collaboration between the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH), the DC Creates Public Art program, the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells.  Artists were encouraged to incorporate their interpretation of the "DC Experience" into their artwork which will encourage people to bike more, enhance the city's standard bike racks, and increase the amount of bike racks throughout the city.  The ceremony will be held at US DOT Plaza at New Jersey Ave and Tingey St, SE.  Please RSVP to Deirdre.ehlen@dc.gov or 202.724.5613.

Stevens on Channel 8 NewsNews 8 Interview with Michael Stevens
On April 15th, Michael Stevens, Executive Director of the BID, was interviewed by New Channel 8.  Michael stressed that development in the Front, though not escaping the current economic crisis that has slowed the pace of development today, has not stopped.  The Capitol Riverfront is already a growing urban neighborhood with 1,500 people living and 35,000 people working in the area, "great accessibility, great proximity to the US Capitol, Congress and centers of employment, an emerging residential base that's well established and a value to retailers."  He closes the interview by reminding people that "just like Verizon Center didn't happen overnight," the Capitol Riverfront will not happen overnight.  Watch the interview here.
