New Development Map Online
An updated development map for 2nd Quarter 2009 is now available online here.  The development map provides a graphic overview of the Front's development projects - completed, under construction, and proposed - and also provides quick summaries of each project. Other downloadable maps and resources can be found on our website here.

Park at the Yards Under Construction
Construction has begun on what will be the Park at the Yards by Forest City Washington.  The world-class five-acre waterfront park will include a riverfront promenade, vast open lawns for community gatherings and outdoor events, gardens, a riverfront courtyard, retail pavilions, a canal basin and waterfall, a pedestrian bridge, and the restoration of the historic Lumber Shed building. The Riverwalk Trail will run through the park and provide vital pedestrian and bicycle links to the rest of the Anacostia waterfront. Part of the largest public-private project in the District in decades, the Yards development will have 2,700 condos and apartments, 400,000 square feet of restaurants and retail, and 1.8 million square feet of office space.  The Capitol Riverfront BID will be responsible for maintaining and programming the park when completed in the summer of 2010.

channel 8Michael Stevens Channel 8 Interview
Last week, Michael Stevens, Executive Director of the Capitol Riverfront, was interviewed by Channel 8 about the Nationals impact on development in the Front.  Stevens discussed how Nationals Ballpark brings millions of people to the Front and brands the area as a destination, and that despite the recession, the residential segment in the Front is strong with over 60% sold, leased and occupied, and a projected 2,000 residents by year's end.  "Retail is typically the last to come to an emerging neighborhood," Stevens said, "But the increase in residents is getting the attention of retailers who want to be here."

Mental MappingMental Mapping for FRONT Residents
Neighborhood residents participated in a Mental Mapping study by Social Compact on July 21st. Residents were asked to draw their home with lines to restaurants, shops, and other service locations where they spend their money, noting dollars spent and distance traveled.  The results will help researchers understand if and how existing neighborhood retail is meeting the needs of residents.  Following the drawing exercise, residents enjoyed wine and cheese while meeting their neighbors!  The BID will provide information about the Mental Mapping results when they are made available.
