Walkingtown DC
Walkingtown DC in the Capitol Riverfront
Over 50 people visited the Capitol Riverfront on Saturday, September 20th, as part of the very successful Walkingtown DC, a weekend of free neighborhood tours. Participants on the Capitol Riverfront walking tour, led by Forest City Washington's Gary McManus and Michael Stevens from the BID, were treated to landmarks such as the beaux-arts style WASA Pump Building, a visit inside the historic Boilermaker shop, and industrial buildings where the Navy once produced ship products.  The tour concluded with a walk past Nationals Park and Half Street, with the final stop at the Velocity condos sales trailer where walkers were treated to bottled water and ballpark peanuts.

The Eco-Bike Tour with about 50 bikers started in front of the Starbucks at US DOT to learn about sustainability initiatives in the BID, including the 30+ LEED certified existing or planned buildings, the largest green roof in DC on the U.S. DOT Building, the first LEED Neighborhood Development Pilot project at The Yards, four new parks including Canal Park, and streetscape built with larger tree boxes and permeable pavers to collect stormwater runoff and increase the green canopy.

Capitol Riverfront Model
Model Update
The model of the Southeast area of DC and the Capitol Riverfront on display in the Capitol Riverfront BID office was updated to include the new Nationals Park and several other developments that were not part of the original scope when the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation first commissioned the model in 2004.  The BID provided CAD drawings to the model makers in order to create the pieces.  State-of-the-art CAD laser cutting was used to produce the pieces with accuracy to 1/10,000,000th of an inch.
