Nationals Park Soft OpeningNationals Ballpark Tasting Night
Neighborhood employees enjoyed a "soft opening" of the concessions at Nationals Ballpark on March 30th, 31st and April 1st.  The Nationals invited area employees to sample food including bbq pulled pork, half smokes, pizzas, garlic fries, ice cream, and more from the new concession provider, Levy Restaurants.  The Navy Yard and the US DOT each had their own days to sample food, while Wednesday was open for 500 BID-area employees who signed up through the Capitol Riverfront BID for free tickets.  Tasters were encouraged to sample and give feedback so that the Nationals can continue Nationals Park Soft Opening to improve the quality of food and service before Opening Day on April 13th!

Canal Park SiteSchoolbuses = GONE
The schoolbuses that have occupied 2 blocks north of M Street, at 2nd Street, have permanently moved to make way for Canal Park.  The site will be graded and seeded to create a green, open space for employees, residents and visitors to enjoy until construction on Canal Park begins in early 2010, with completion in 2011.  Olin, a landscape architecture firm from Philadelphia known for designing the Sculpture Garden in DC and Bryant Park in NYC, will design the 3-block park with features such as solar panels on lightpoles and neighboring buildings, a new pavilion, a cafe, and possible summertime fountain and winter ice skating rink.

Four new public artworks located in the Nationals Ballpark Center Field Plaza and at the Home Plate Gate were unveiled on Wednesday, April 8th during a public ceremony emcee'd by baseball historian Phil Wood.  The three sculptures portray Washington Senators' Frank Howard, Walter Johnson, and Hoemstead Grays' Josh Gibson, created by Omri Amrany; the suspended artwork, The Ballgame, was created by Walter Kravitz.  All pieces were commissioned by the DC Creates Public Arts Program and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with the Washington Nationals, DC Sport and  Entertainment and HOK Sport.
