200 I St., SE Breaks Ground & 55 M St., SE is 85% Leased
Hammer

On Tuesday, February 15, Vincent Gray and other city officials joined the Capitol Riverfront community to commemorate the beginning of renovations at 200 I Street, SE. The building, previously the site of the Washington Star, will house the District of Columbia Office of the Chief Technology Officer, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, and the Child and Family Services Agency. The renovation is expected to be complete and tenants moved into the 320,000-square-foot LEED Gold office by late 2012. Street level frontage will include retail space, as well as an art gallery for showcasing works from the Arts and Humanities Commission's collection.

At 55 M Street, SE Monument Realty recently announced that it has leased 85% of the building after a very successful 4th quarter that saw large leases signed with the District of Columbia's Department of Transportation (DDOT) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). DDOT signed a 150,000 SF lease agreement for a portion of the third floor and all of the fourth through seventh floors. DDOT will be relocating from 2000 14th Street, NW and plans to occupy the building by April/May 2011. FAA signed a 50,000 SF lease agreement for 10 years on the eighth floor and a portion of the ninth floor. FAA is scheduled to occupy the building in April 2011.

Help Choose the Movies for this Year's Summer Film Series

We had more than 250 votes, and the race was neck and neck between the Summer Movies and Academy Award winners. For most of the survey, the categories were tied at 50/50, but in the last two days the preferred theme was selected. So the WINNER is...

Academy Award Movies

But we need your help again to help us choose which movies we should show over the ten week series. Let us know if you think we missed any critical films, but keep in mind that we are limited by availability, ratings of PG-13, length and copy-write issues. Sensorium will be a Dining Experience to Engage All of the Senses

Sensorium

Beginning April 12, 2011, food lovers looking for an evening of exploration, combining culinary playfulness with theatrical costumes, lighting and music can head to the Capitol Riverfront, for a 12-course meal complete with wine pairings.  Each delicious course will be complemented with an intertwined vignette.

This culinary production will be housed for six weeks (April 12th - May 22nd) in a customized 36-foot geodesic dome on the east lawn of Yards Park just a few blocks from the National's Park stadium. Chef  Bryon Brown is bringing together some of the District's most creative minds consisting of artists, producers, lighting and sound designers to create a culinary series for spring 2011.

Taking place weekly, Tuesday-Sunday evenings, Sensorium will offer two seating times: 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM Sunday-Thursday; 6:30 PM and 9:30 PM on Friday and Saturday nights. Each show is designed for only 30 guests per seating.  The all-inclusive tickets price begins at $125 during the opening week's first two nights (April 12-13) and tickets to the following performance are available for $150 per person, also all inclusive.

"People are eager for new experiences around a meal," says Brown. "I know this firsthand after hosting over 700 supper club members through Artisa Kitchen, which I founded in January 2010. The supper club gatherers have repeatedly expressed how much they enjoy the intimacy and shared experiences at these successful gallery dinners. Taking this all into consideration, we want to bring a totally new, more exciting and engaging culinary production to these diners."

Faces of the Front: Justin Ross of Justin's Cafe

JustinJustin Ross, owner of Justin's Cafe at 1025 First Street, SE, in the Velocity Condominium building, opened his doors to the Capitol Riverfront a year ago this April. He wanted to open a neighborhood watering hole where people can enjoy a fast casual lunch during the day, but could also come together for drinks or a nice dinner in the afternoon and evening. Justin's Cafe specializes in food that can be enjoyed anytime, unlike many typical chain establishments. Everything is made fresh, in-house, and is never frozen.

Justin came to the Capitol Riverfront to make simple, good food. He said, "we worked with our recipes, tasting them until they were just right."

Justin said that he likes the neighborhood because everyone is friendly and has interesting things to talk about. "People come here for a reason, from a lot of different places. They have interesting stories and interesting jobs. It's great to be in a place where people have come to start something."

He chose to live in the neighborhood and open his restaurant because "there is opportunity here."  He felt that people overlook what can be accomplished in the off-season, when baseball isn't bringing crowds of fans to the community. Justin's Cafe is a destination in the community for residents and employees. They have Wine Night on Mondays, Trivia on Tuesdays and Happy Hour from 4-8 on the weekdays. If you want to meet your  Faces Headesneighbors and participate in the fun come down and hang out at Justin's Cafe.
