Van NessDC Public Schools Meeting with Capitol Riverfront Neighborhood

On December 8, 2010, Kaya Henderson, the interim chancellor of DC Public Schools, and Councilmember Tommy Wells met with community members that would like to see Van Ness Elementary reopened. DCPS held this listening session before they come to a decision about reopening the school. The decision will be made in January 2011. DCPS will be considering population estimates, enrollment trends and the costs of capital expenditure among other criteria throughout its evaluation.

According to DCPS surveys and residents in attendance, an 'overwhelming majority' of neighborhood parents want to see Van Ness Elementary reopened. Parents were told that Van Ness will not open for the 2011-12 school year. If the DCPS does not reopen Van Ness in the near future, DCPS are also examining the possibility of redrawing the boundaries of school districts to accommodate neighborhood children. Councilmember Wells said that, with Van Ness in pretty good shape, capital funds shouldn't be a barrier to getting the school reopened if the enrollment numbers are high enough. During the meeting EYA pledged to undertake certain renovations at Van Ness if it would help get the school reopened.

While there is a lot of energy and enthusiasm for reopening of the school, the DCPS analysis and conclusion will be based on estimates of the future number of families living in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood near Van Ness Elementary.

Curve BallCurve Ball Installed at National Ballpark
Last week the sculpture "Curve Ball" by public artist Thomas Sayre and commissioned by DC Creates! was installed at Nationals Ballpark. The design and fabrication of this project began in 2007, after selection of Thomas Sayre and his office - Clearscapes Architecture and Art from Raleigh, North Carolina.

On the eastern side of the Nationals parking garage, stainless steel baseballs follow the path of a curve ball's flight. The western garage facade follows the higher-angled trajectory of a hit ball by the batter. At night these thirty colossal baseballs will shine by means of energy efficient LED lights, and the lights are programmed to match the energy of the ensuing baseball game.

Faces December 2010Faces of the Front: The Price Family

Faces HeadesThe Capitol Riverfront BID is highlighting people who live and/or work in the neighborhood as part of "Faces of the Front." Each newsletter will feature a different person and their story. All the profiles can be found on our website here. If you would like to be considered or would like to nominate someone else as a future Face of the Front, let us know here.

Jonathon & Sarah Price and their daughter Lana (along with their dog Lewis!) moved here in 2006, when "Capitol Hill Tower was one of the only buildings around," said Sarah. They have been valued members of the Capitol Riverfront community ever since. The Price family loves seeing the community grow, because "something new is always happening on the Riverfront".

Some of their favorite things about the community are its walkability and the park space. The close proximity to 8th Street; the National Mall, and the ballpark are just a few of the reasons why the Front is a great spot for the young family. The Price family enjoys easy access to the Metro and work, as well as the nearby Botanical Gardens which is a great option for educational entertainment. Their favorite nearby hotspots are Las Placitas, Teds Bulletin, and Cava on Barracks Row.

They appreciate the Capitol Riverfront because they, "developed great relationships with neighbors, especially through our kids," and they "formed a true 'neighborhood' within our condo building, with friends in other buildings and EYA."

The Price Family looks forward to the future of the Front, especially having more restaurants, the completion of Canal Park, the potential reopening of Van Ness Elementary School, and grocery stores.

Sarah added, "It has been a very evident that the BID is committed to this area and we have seen so many changes over the four years we have been here. The green spaces, along with all the summer events, have truly made this feel like a home/neighborhood, and outweighs anything the suburbs has to offer!"
