Returning from the Thanksgiving holiday, residents and employees were greeted by bright snowflakes on the lightpoles in the neighborhood.  The 48 lighted snowflakes bring a festive atmosphere to the neighborhood and will stay lit throughout the holiday season. 



abatementNonprofit Tax Abatement Available
The Capitol Riverfront BID is offering a Nonprofit Tax Abatement as part of DC's Nonprofit Tax Abatement Program for nonprofits and associations.  The 10-year abatement program which took effect in October encourages qualifying nonprofits and associations to relocate into new business districts such as the Capitol Riverfront and 4 others in DC.  The Capitol Riverfront will receive $177,500 of the total $500,000 of the pilot program allotment.  Applications for qualifying 501(c)3,4, or 6 nonprofits for space ranging from 5,000 SF to 100,000 SF will be accepted starting Dec. 14 on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Find more information at www.dcbiz.dc.gov or email Ted Skirbunt, Director of Research and Information Systems, at ted@capitolriverfront.org.  Click HERE for a brief summary of the program.
vannessDC Public Schools Meeting with Capitol Riverfront Neighborhood
Interim DCPS Chancellor Henderson will be meeting with the Capitol Riverfront community on Wednesday, Dec. 8th at 6 pm at the Marriott Courtyard (140 L St, SE).  DC Public Schools (DCPS) has agreed to assess the feasibility of reopening Van Ness Elementary School and will be sharing preliminary data findings from surveys on whether or not enrollment can be sustained.  Chancellor Henderson will take questions and comments from attendees.  No decision will be announced but it is a valuable opportunity for the Chancellor to listen and respond to the interests and concerns of the Capitol Riverfront community.

holidaymarketThird Annual Holiday Market 2010

Wrap up your holiday shopping at the Capitol Riverfront's Third Annual Holiday Market!  The Market will run from Tuesday, Dec. 14 - Saturday, Dec. 18 from 11 am - 7 pm weekdays and from 10 am - 3 pm on Saturday.  This year the market will be held on the sidewalk in front of 1100 New Jersey Ave, SE by New Jersey and M Streets, directly across from the Metro.  New this season is extended hours to allow for those on earlier lunch breaks and residents coming home after work to enjoy the festive market.  In addition, the Market will be held on Saturday with free coffee, bagels and pastries.  Shop the market for wool sweaters and mittens, homemade soaps, jewelry, antique maps, wreaths and holiday greenery, paintings, and much more!   See the flyer here including the full list of exhibitors.  Stay tuned for news on special giveaways on Saturday, Dec. 18th!

Ron McBee, ANC 6D, and his team donated nearly 200 turkeys to the local DC community the week before Thanksgiving from the Marriott Courtyard on L Street, SE.  They handed out turkeys until 1 am!  Thanks to Ron and his team for their generosity, and to the Marriott Courtyard for hosting the turkey giveaway!

cap quarterCapitol Quarter Awarded ULI Jack Kemp Award
EYA and the DC Housing Authority (DCHA) were honored at the 2010 Jack Kemp Workforce Housing Models of Excellence Awards on Thursday, Nov. 18th for preserving affordable homeownership opportunities at Capitol Quarter.  Urban Land Institute (ULI) Terwilliger Center presented the awards to projects which include innovative financing, unique construction methodologies, and strong public/private partnerships.  Through a unique partnership with DCHA, EYA has been able to harness market-rate land values with tax credits and local bonds to create a vibrant community.  The neighborhood includes a mix of housing serving all income levels, including market-rate homes, workforce homes and affordable rental homes.

Incentives for Environmental Site Design Workshop
The Anacostia Watershed Restoration Partnership is sponsoring an Incentives for Environmental Site Design (ESD) workshop on Tuesday, December 7th from 9:15 am - 2:30 pm.  The workshop will address the value and feasibility of government incentives for property owners to install ESD and will include both presentations and discussion periods.  The workshop is free except a small charge for lunch, and will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Center at Fenton St and Ellsworth Dr in Silver Spring.  Please preregister HERE.  See the flyer here and the agenda for the day here.
