Wrap up your holiday shopping at the Capitol Riverfront BID's 2nd Annual Holiday Market.  For four days, the Front will transform into a festive holiday marketplace with local artisans selling handcrafted jewelry, pottery, crafts, watercolor and photography.  In addition to the 14 artisans this year, Gingko's Gardens will be selling small trees and greenery, and Ali Baba's Falafel and Bigg Poppa Kettle Korn will be selling their signature snacks, along with homemade soups and funnel cake.  Each day a different musician will entertain visitors from 12 - 2 pm at the Holiday Market stage.   The Capitol Riverfront Holiday Market will be open Tuesday, December 15th through Friday, December 18th from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the sidewalk alongside Canal Park at 2nd and M/L Streets, SE, one block from the Navy Yard Metro.  In addition, the market will be open until 7:00 pm on Wednesday for area residents to shop after work.  The Holiday Market is presented by the BID and Diverse Markets Management.

Snowflakes are lighting up the streets in the Front!  This year snowflakes on the lightpoles extend further on M Street, New Jersey Ave and light up First Street by Velocity Condos and Onyx-on-First apartments. 
Also, the mums in the planters around the neighborhood have been replaced for the winter season with brightly colored pansies.

Annual Meeting & State of the Capitol Riverfront
Join the Capitol Riverfront BID for our Annual Meeting Luncheon & State of the Capitol Riverfront on Thursday, December 17th from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm at Monument's 55 M Street, SE.  Speakers include Christopher Leinberger from The Brookings Institution, Stan Kasten from the Washington Nationals, and Councilmember Tommy Wells.  RSVP here by Friday, December 11th.
 
 
Lower8thLower 8th Street, SE Visioning Community Meeting
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 15th to participate in the 3rd of 4 total community meetings hosted by the BID and Barracks Row Main Street.  This meeting will focus on best practices and look at regional and national examples of mixed-use projects. The meetings serve as a community participation process to gain consensus on a vision for the area and to address issues that might impact achieving the vision while respecting the historical fabric of the neighborhood.  The meeting will be held on December 15, 2009 at 8:30 am and repeated at 7:00 pm at the People's Church, 535 8th Street, SE.

The Yards Awarded LEED Gold Certification
Forest City Washington, Inc. has earned LEED Gold Certification from USGBC for its entire 42-acre mixed-use Yards waterfront project.  The LEED Gold Certified Neighborhood Development Plan gives the Yards distinction as a result of its Stage Two design approval.  The Yards will feature over 2,800 new residential units, 1.8 million square feet of office space, 400,000 square feet of retail space and a world-class riverfront park. The public park, currently under construction, will open in summer 2010 as the project's initial element.  Read the full press release here.

Over 100 neighborhood residents gathered at Jefferson Apartment's pub/lounge on Sunday, November 22nd to watch the Redskins vs Cowboys game, enjoy chicken tacos, buffalo tenders and other gameday snacks, and meet their neighbors.  Residents from newly-opened Velocity condos, Axiom, Capitol Hill Tower, Jefferson, The 909 and Onyx were all invited to the afternoon football event.  The BID hosted this annual fall gathering for residents.  Photos will be posted to our flickr page soon. 

Coat Drive at Nationals Park
The Washington Nationals have partnered with Serve DC to host the One Warm Coat Drive at Nationals Park from November 5th through December 11th.  Coats can be dropped off at the Nationals Park Team Store at Centerfield Gate.  The drive is a national community service effort organized by One Warm Coat Foundation which collects clean, reuseable coats and jackets to donate to District adults and children.  The Coalition for the Homeless, a local non-profit whose mission is to help the homeless, at-risk individuals and families return to self-sufficient and independent living, will distribute the coats.  All coat donations are tax-deductible and more information can be found at www.onewarmcoat.orgRead the full press release here.

Free, Reusable Grocery Bags
The District Department of the Environment is giving out free grocery bags prior to the 5 cent disposable bag tax that goes into action on January 1, 2010.  DDOE has parterned with CVS stores to give out thousands of the tote bags throughout December.  Pick up your bag on December 17th from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm at CVS, 1100 New Jersey Ave, SE.  Approximately 3 cents of the disposable bag fee will go to the new Anacostia River Protection Fund which will use the funds to provide reusable bags, and promote education efforts and river clean up.  Learn more here.
