The Capitol Riverfront BID is excited to announce its 2010 outdoor movie theme - Ultimate Underdogs!  We need your help in selecting the top 10 underdog movies.  Please take our survey HERE and share your ideas.  Enjoy the movies you voted for every Thursday night beginning June 3rd on the giant 35 foot screen at the future site of Canal Park, located at 2nd Street, SE and M Street, SE.

Last year, over 300 people attended the Best of the 80s outdoor movies each week at Tingey Plaza behind USDOT.  This year we've moved locations to Canal Park to be closer to the Metro and accommodate more people.  See photos from last year's movies on our flickr page.

lower8Lower 8th Street, SE Vision Process Final Meeting
The fifth and final community meetings for the Lower 8th Street, SE Vision Process were held on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd at the Peoples Church.  A vision for the area, goals issues, height/density, mix-of-uses, and Virginia Avenue Park were just some of the topics discussed at the five community meetings which began in October 2009.  At the last meeting on Tuesday, several conceptual designs for the study area were presented by Amy Weinstein of Esocoff & Associates.  Attendees were able to see how 45 foot, 65 foot and 85 foot tall buildings would look on 3 different sites and had the opportunity to give their feedback.  Presentations and meeting minutes are posted on the blog at www.lower8thstreet.blogspot.com.  Please feel free to comment and share your opinion.  These meetings served as a community participation process to gain consensus on a vision for the area and to identify issues that might impact achieving the vision while respecting the historical fabric of the neighborhood. A report will be submitted to the Office of Planning with the community response and recommendations for Lower 8th Street, SE.

diamond teagueIslands at Diamond Teague Park
Walk to Diamond Teague Park and you'll see several wetland islands floating in the Anacostia River.  Made from recycled plastic, floating wetland islands are used for restoring urban rivers by providing nutrients from the plant growth on top and removing pollutants from the river.  The islands contribute to wildlife restoration by improving water quality, providing nesting for waterfowl, and protection for fish.  The 7 floating islands off Diamond Teague Park, the "BlueWing Islands," total 1,621 square feet.  Other islands are existing or planned for the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, Annapolis, Philadelphia and the Chesapeake Bay.  BlueWing Environmental Solutions which installed the project is located in Severna Park, MD.  View the presentation about floating wetlands here.

Mostofa Mohammedmostofa
Owner, Subway

Stop in to Mostofa Mohammed's Subway sandwich shop near the corner of New Jersey Avenue and M Street, SE on any day during lunchtime, and hungry Capitol Riverfront customers will be lined up out the door and streaming out onto the sidewalk.

Since its opening in December 2004, this Subway restaurant has experienced double-digit annual growth that has catapulted it into the top five ranking of the chain's 1,000 stores in the Greater Washington region.  Even with the economic decline, the restaurant is still growing, experiencing eight or nine percent growth instead of the usual 10 to 15 percent growth in years past.

"The Capitol Riverfront is one of the best places in DC," comments Mr. Mohammed.  "I'm very blessed to be in this prestigious place."

Several years ago the fast food impresario was on a casual drive through the Capitol Riverfront when he saw that a Chinese restaurant seemed to be the lone food establishment in the area.  Where others saw only empty lots, he saw possibilities.

And his casual visit to the Front opened the door to new opportunity.

Then came the Nationals, the US Department of Transportation, the Marriott Courtyard, new office construction, Artomatic, and a steady stream of customers.  Today, the restaurant is open seven days a week.  And on days when there are games, they have to make sure they have extra help on hand.

"People are getting to know this area because of the Nationals and some of the events.  Sure the economy is bad now but it's not going to stay like that forever.  I really believe that," he says.

To Mostafa Mohammed, it's a neighborhood of profit - and promise.

"Once people figure out what's happening on this side of town, they will have to have a town home or condo here or find a job here."
