CamdenCamden Apartments to Begin Soon

Representatives from Camden Property Trust have confirmed they plan to begin construction on their "Camden South Capitol" apartment building located at 1345 South Capitol Street, SW with a groundbreaking estimated for sometime in March.  The 276-unit apartment building will also feature 3,000 SF of ground floor retail, a roof deck with pool, and 250 parking spaces.  The project is targeted to deliver in mid-2013. While located immediately outside the Capitol Riverfront BID boundaries, the project speaks to the strong residential demand of our neighborhood.

Development Update: Harry's Reserve and Lot 38 Espresso

Lot38The owners of the construction project on the corner of L St. & 2nd St. SE has announced that they intend on being open this April for espresso, coffee and various sandwiches. This espresso bar will be called Lot 38 Espresso, in reference to the building lot where it is located.

Harry's Reserve, purveyors of fine wines and liquors is preparing to open its doors at 909 New Jersey Ave SE. The interior has been installed and the store should be open this February.

Faces of the Front: Captain Apollo, aka Paul Broom

Faces HeadesBefore becoming resident manager of 'Casa degli Angeli,' located at 1026 3rd Street SE, Paul Broom (better known as Captain Apollo) traveled the world in the Merchant Marine. After coming to DC in 1990, his first stop was the sidewalk of Henry's for a lunch break, and he immediately fell in love with the Hill. One thing that became apparent to him was that, as a port and the nation's capital, there was no evidence of a Sailor's Home here in Washington.

After studying the logistics of running a successful B&B, as well as gaining a diploma on Hotel/Restaurant Management in 2006, he was searching for suitable premises for a B&B facility.  On a sunny day in July 2006, Paul suddenly spotted the vacant apartment building on the corner of 3rd and L ApolloStreet SE. This location inside the Capitol Riverfront was the perfect size and location for his project. On January 1st 2009 they opened their doors to their first guests during the Inauguration of President Obama. Captain Apollo and his wife Irene now have various suites and other accommodations that are presently operated as a short term residence.

During their time in the neighborhood, Paul and Irene have been in contact with the Capitol Riverfront BID, their ANC, and the Washington Navy Yard for their guidance and encouraging support. While this new community develops, Captain Apollo has had several guests fall in love with the neighborhood and move into a nearby condo or apartment. With the proximity to the Capitol, they have had many staffers and interns make us their sanctuary while working in Washington, DC. Captain Apollo said, "Within a few days, everyone feels that this is a most convenient location, and is destined to become a major city attraction."
