Faces of the Front: Captain Apollo, aka Paul Broom
Before becoming resident manager of 'Casa degli Angeli,' located at 1026 3rd Street SE, Paul Broom (better known as Captain Apollo) traveled the world in the Merchant Marine. After coming to DC in 1990, his first stop was the sidewalk of Henry's for a lunch break, and he immediately fell in love with the Hill. One thing that became apparent to him was that, as a port and the nation's capital, there was no evidence of a Sailor's Home here in Washington.
After studying the logistics of running a successful B&B, as well as gaining a diploma on Hotel/Restaurant Management in 2006, he was searching for suitable premises for a B&B facility. On a sunny day in July 2006, Paul suddenly spotted the vacant apartment building on the corner of 3rd and L Street SE. This location inside the Capitol Riverfront was the perfect size and location for his project. On January 1st 2009 they opened their doors to their first guests during the Inauguration of President Obama. Captain Apollo and his wife Irene now have various suites and other accommodations that are presently operated as a short term residence.
During their time in the neighborhood, Paul and Irene have been in contact with the Capitol Riverfront BID, their ANC, and the Washington Navy Yard for their guidance and encouraging support. While this new community develops, Captain Apollo has had several guests fall in love with the neighborhood and move into a nearby condo or apartment. With the proximity to the Capitol, they have had many staffers and interns make us their sanctuary while working in Washington, DC. Captain Apollo said, "Within a few days, everyone feels that this is a most convenient location, and is destined to become a major city attraction."
