District Adds Almost 10,000 Residents in 2009 Mayor Fenty touts increase in DC and Capitol Riverfront population
On December 31, 2009, Mayor Adrian M. Fenty held a press conference in the Front at the 400 M Street, SE apartment building to announce that the District's population grew by 9,600 residents in 2009.  This increase brings the city's total population to almost 600,000 residents, and marks the District's largest gain since WWII, four times the average year-on-year growth rate since 2001. "These gains reflect a significant vote of confidence that the District of Columbia is moving in the right direction, " said Mayor Fenty. Mayor Fenty also spoke of the strong residential growth in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, with an estimated population now over 2,500 and expected to surpass 3,000 residents by the end of 2010.  View the official press release here.

11th Street Bridge Construction & Traffic Advisory This WeekendNew 11th Street Bridge Under Construction
DDOT announced that work has begun on the new 11th Street Bridges, a $300 million four-year demolition and construction project.  Three new spans will cross the Anacostia River, providing expanded freeway access to I-295 and the SE/SW freeway and a new local traffic bridge.  The new local traffic bridge will include streetcar tracks, wide walking/biking paths, overlook spots, and even osprey nests.  View the official press release and links to more information here.
DDOT is advising residents, workers, and visitors that construction on the Southeast Freeway could impact traffic this weekend.  DDOT is scheduled to temporarily close lanes on the eastbound side of the Southeast Freeway this weekend for the demolition of two RFK access ramps that cross the freeway.  The left lane and shoulder will be closed just prior to the I-295 South and Pennsylvania Avenue split.  That means all traffic approaching the split will have to take the I-295 exit.  There will be no access to RFK Stadium or Pennsylvania Avenue from the SE Freeway.  More information is available here on alternate routes.

Daryl Jackson
Daryl Jackson, a General Services Administration (GSA) Contracting Officer, moved to the CapitolFaces of the Front - Jackson Riverfront in August 2006.  His friends envy the spirit of community that is evident every time they visit him at his co-op.  Charmed by the friendly atmosphere, they frequent neighborhood parties and events - and a number of them have even moved to the Front to catch some of this spirit themselves.

"We are a close-knit community and have bonded in a way that others don't," Jackson says.

The bonds are forged, Jackson notes, because the neighborhood tucked between the Capitol and the river is so new and still developing.  While there is much to be proud of in the neighborhood today, much more - including more restaurants, shopping, and grocery stores - is on deck.

In the meantime, residents have created their own entertainment, holding cocktail parties, pre- and post- Nationals games get-togethers in each other's homes, and rooftop soirees.  And everyone turns out in force to organized neighborhood events like the evening outdoor movies and concerts, frequently preceded by drinks at the Bullpen.

"There is always something going on," Jackson notes.

The General Services Administration Contracting Officer moved to the neighborhood in August of 2006 from suburban Maryland.  While he considered other areas like the U-Street and Massachusetts Avenue corridors and Mt. Vernon Square, the Front appealed to him because of its unique vision for the future and amenities of the present.

Jackson enjoys the open space, the river and the sense of being close to the outdoors within an urban setting.  And he loves the convenient access to everything he needs - his office is two Metro stops away and the shops and restaurants of Barracks Row and Capitol Hill are within walking distance.  Whatever else he might want is readily available by hopping on the Metro or jumping in the car and getting on one of the freeways that run next to the neighborhood.

"I feel very positively about what is going on here and what it is going to be in the next five years," Jackson says.
