badmintonCanal Park Picnic & Front Door Home Tour
The first annual Canal Park Picnic & Front Door Home Tour is this Saturday, September 19th from 10 am - 2 pm.  The Canal Park community picnic will feature the band Cazhmiere playing from 12 - 2 pm, free food from Smokin' Somethin' BBQ, Sweetflow Mobile frozen yogurt, free photobooth by Majestic Photobooths, drawings by Results Gym and lawn games including ladder golf, badminton, volleyball, and hula hoops. Bring your own favorite backyard games too!  The FRONT Door Tour will feature a variety of unique residents' homes including Capitol Quarter townhomes with a sushi demo, new apartments and condos, and renovated rowhouses with one featuring wood floors from Monticello. Two neighborhood tours will be offered at 10:30 am which begins at the Navy Yard Metro (New Jersey Ave) and 12:30 pm which begins at the BID's Welcome Tent at Canal Park at 2nd and M Streets, SE.  The FRONT Door Tour will be free and open to the public.

Walk around the Capitol Riverfront and you'll be sure to notice the giant planters filled with a variety of mums, roses and grasses, as well as new fence banners enlivening the streetscape.  In the past 2 weeks, the Capitol Riverfront has brightened the public realm with 21 planters placed along M Street.  The mums will be blossoming soon in a variety of colors in the coming weeks.  In addition, the Front's new branding campaign is reflected in the vivid fence banners located at the entrances to the BID at New Jersey Avenue and 8th Street, SE.

Car Free Day on Sept 22
Take the Car Free Pledge for the 2nd Annual Car Free Day DC on Tuesday, September 22nd!  The Front is accessible by a wide variety of public transit modes that support the environment including Metro, Circulator, e-cruzers, bikes, and is just a short walk from Barracks Row and Capitol Hill.  When you participate in Car Free Day, you'll be entered to win a variety of prizes while also helping to improve air quality, save money and reduce your carbon footprint.  Make your pledge here.  
browBarracks Row Oktoberfest
Historic Barracks Row's 6th Annual Oktoberfest will roll out the barrels on Saturday, September 26, 2009 on 8th Street, SE.  This year will feature hourly tours of the Commandants Home and a performance by the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.  Enjoy the afternoon at the local restaurants' beer garden, listen to music performed by German bands, visit over 70 booths including artists, food vendors and more, and stop by the large petting zoo.  The Capitol Riverfront BID will also have a booth at the event. The Military Culinary Competition pits Navy, Army, Air Force and the Coast Guard against each other for a fast-paced cooking showdown.  Oktoberfest runs from 11 am - 5 pm on Saturday, September 26 on Historic Barracks Row, 8th Street, SE - just below Eastern Market and north of the Capitol Riverfront.  Read the full press release here.

Toy Story was cancelled last night, however, join us for Spaceballs next Thursday night at Canal Park (M and 2nd Streets, SE), part of the BID's Outer Space movie series.  Bring blankets and chairs, friends and family, and enjoy the movie with a dinner picnic!  The schedule is as follows:

September 24 - Spaceballs
October 1 - Apollo 13
October 8 - Star Wars (rescheduled)
TBD - Toy Story (rescheduled) 
 
living classrooms2nd Annual A Night at the Yards
Enjoy an evening under the stars at A Night at The Yards, a festive and casual benefit party, hosted by Living Classrooms.  Featuring music by Trombone Shorty, New Orleans jazz band, and food and drinks from a variety of popular DC restaurants including Matchbox, Jordan's 8, Flying Dog Ales, Honest Tea, Cantina Marina, and more!  If your restaurant is interested in participating, please contact Mari Lou Livingood at mlivingood@livingclassroomsdc.org.
