Happy New Year! What a difference a year makes. The Capitol Riverfront BID celebrates the many notable moments that took place in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood during 2014. Take a look at the year in review...
JANUARY

 

The BID held its 7th Annual Meeting & State of the Capitol Riverfront Luncheon on Thursday, January 16th, at Nationals Park to celebrate the ongoing accomplishments in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood.

Soon after, the BID embarked on an office renovation project at 1100 New Jersey Avenue, SE.

Developer Forest City Washington broke ground on Arris, a mixed-use project with 327 apartment units and 20,000 SF of ground floor retail.
FEBRUARY

Capitol Riverfront BID President Michael Stevens received the "2014 Public Sector Trendsetter of the Year" award presented by Transwestern Mid-Atlantic and Delta Associates for his dedicated and steadfast leadership in spearheading the resurgence of this 500-acre urban neighborhood.


The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) announced its move to 143,000 SF of space in 1015 Half Street.

The Buccini/Pollin Group broke ground on the 168-room Hampton Inn & Suites at First and N Streets, SE.
MARCH

 

A joyous group of federal and District officials, lenders, developers, and residents broke ground on the Lofts at Capitol Quarter, a 195-unit mixed-income apartment building that is the latest phase in the rebuild of the Capper/Carrollsburg development.
APRIL

CBS Radio Inc. announced the move of its regional headquarters, including six local stations, to 1015 Half Street. The broadcaster signed a lease for 33,042 SF on the second floor of the 10-story building, as well as 3,000 SF on the building's ground floor for use as a performance studio.


The Capitol Riverfront BID and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH) hosted the Lantern Making Family Day in Yards Park to celebrate the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
MAY

 

The 4th Annual Friday Night Summer Concert Series kicked off in Yards Park and entertained over 40,000 people throughout the summer.

Tour de Fat was back in Yards Park and better than ever! Festival goers enjoyed fun times, bikes, and brews, complete with a costumed bicycle parade, eclectic entertainment, bike contests, local food, and New Belgium beverages.

WC Smith broke ground on 800 New Jersey Avenue, SE, a 336-unit apartment building that will also contain 35,000 SF of ground floor retail for a Whole Foods Market, with two levels of Whole Foods customer parking above.

"Jazz at the Capitol Riverfront,"

presented by DC Jazzfest, was held in Yards Park and brought droves of lively fans from across the Mid-Atlantic region. The entire weekend featured an extensive line-up of notable jazz performers, local vendors Ice Cream Jubilee and Bluejacket, and kid-friendly activities.

Farm-to-table restaurant Sweetgreen opened in the Capitol Riverfront at Twelve12 in The Yards.

 

Popular DC ice cream brand Ice Cream Jubilee opened its first store at the Lumber Shed in The Yards.

The enjoyment of free VIDA Fitness classes in Yards Park continued despite the July heat! After kicking off earlier in the summer, VIDA's free "Get Fit for Summer Workouts" offered a variety of eight classes weekly, including boot camp, yoga, and Zumba.
AUGUST

Korean BBQ taco restaurant TaKorean opened at Twelve12 in The Yards.


Donohoe Development Company began demolition on Saint Matthews Church at the corner of New Jersey Avenue, SE and L Street, SE to make way for the construction of Gallery at Capitol Riverfront, a 324-unit apartment building at 1111 New Jersey Avenue, SE.
SEPTEMBER

 

The top-secret location for the District's inaugural Dîner En Blanc was none other than the Capitol Riverfront's very own Yards Park. A pleasant breeze from the river greeted the 1,400 guests, traveling on foot from all over the city, bedecked in white fashions from wedding dresses to wigs, with picnics and elaborate table-settings.

Several other premiere events took place throughout the Capitol Riverfront during September, including the Third Annual DC VegFest and Snallygaster.
OCTOBER

VIDA Fitness at The Yards opened in Twelve12, along with its affiliates Bang Salon and Aura Spa. VIDA, Bang, and Aura celebrated with a Grand Opening on October 18th that featured entertainment and cuisine from Capitol Riverfront restaurants.


The BID celebrated the Washington Nationals postseason play with a ton of Natitude in Yards Park! The BID hosted Nats fans for a Nationals celebration in Yards Park, featuring live music and game viewings with craft brews and food from local restaurants.
NOVEMBER

 

Harris Teeter opened its doors to the public as the first full-service grocery store in the Capitol Riverfront. The 50,000 SF Harris Teeter is within walking distance of Nationals Park and the growing residential population in the Capitol Riverfront.

Homemade barbecue joint Willie's Brew & Que and pet store Unleashed by Petco opened in the Boilermaker Shops in The Yards.

The Canal Park Ice Rink opened for its 3rd season, featuring daily programming and events including "2 for Tuesdays," College Night, and Rock & Skate.
DECEMBER

The Capitol Riverfront BID presented the inaugural PARCEL Market at Canal Park. This new holiday market concept featured talented independent vendors, a food area from local food artisans and restaurants, music from local DJs, and an interactive temporary art installation.


MRP Realty and Florida Rock Properties broke ground on The Riverfront, a mixed-use apartment building that is the first phase of Riverfront on the Anacostia, a multi-phase planned unit development in the Capitol Riverfront.

Three new restaurants opened in the neighborhood, including lodge-themed restaurant and sports bar The Big Stick, Spanish restaurant 100 Montaditos, and Subway Cafe. With these latest openings, a total of 27 restaurants are now open in the Capitol Riverfront.
