SnowTeamCapitol Riverfront Clean & Safe Team Lead Winter Storm Jonas Dig out
Despite the recent treacherous winter storm, Capitol Riverfront residents and employees have been able to walk to their offices and homes safely thanks to the Capitol Riverfront Clean & Safe Team!

The Clean & Safe Team worked diligently over the weekend, day and night, to ensure that snow was cleared from primary sidewalks and crosswalks, Metro station entrances, bus stops, and neighborhood parks. We are grateful for our Men in Blue and appreciate their hard work and sacrifices made to stay in the neighborhood over the weekend and facilitate snow removal throughout the area.

Please remember to thank Clean & Safe Team members as you see them, and include #MenInBlue when mentioning #DCDigOut in your Capitol Riverfront snow photos!

RiverkeeperFaces of the Front: Emily Franc with Anacostia Riverkeeper
Emily Franc, Riverkeeper for local non-profit Anacostia Riverkeeper, has been working to improve the Anacostia River watershed since last fall. Prior to joining Anacostia Riverkeeper, Emily worked on environmental policy issues on Capitol Hill and in Jamaica with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Anacostia Riverkeeper works to restore the river, reduce pollution, keep it trash free, and provide opportunities for the local community to connect to the river. The organization also hosts volunteer clean-ups of the river, as well as free activities such as boat tours, Friday Night Fishing, and kayaking.

How would you describe the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood to friends and visitors?

It is a vibrant community that is developing its own unique blend of small town charm and big city amenities. With the Anacostia River as its front doorstep, the area takes full advantage of the beauty of the river with great outdoor spaces, a variety of dining options, community events, and docks for public access to the river.

WasteHelp Anacostia Riverkeeper Preserve the Riverfront
There are many actions that all Capitol Riverfront residents can take to help support a clean and healthy river. According to Anacostia Riverkeeper, the biggest impact that you can make in this community is to not litter, and littering includes pet waste!

You may have been asked by neighbors and residential buildings to clean up after your pets, but do you know the science behind it? Pet waste left curbside, on lawns or walkways will eventually be washed away, down storm drains and into the river.  However, this is not a good solution because pet waste contains bacteria and diseases that make the water unsafe for aquatic life and potentially humans as well.  How great will it be to have a swimmable Anacostia River someday soon?  A swimmable river will become a reality, and the simple act of taking care of our own trash, including pets' waste, will help get us there.

YardsParkYards Park Overlook Awning to Receive Makeover
Winter Storm Jonas did leave its mark on Yards Park.

The constant snow combined with fierce winds were unfortunately too much weight for the canvas awnings at the Yards Park Overlook, but the Capitol Riverfront BID and Yards Park plan to have replacements made before the start of the concert season.

For the moment, think of the uncovered frames as "sky lights!"
