The Boilermaker Shops are Coming Along Quickly

boilermakerSwing by the Boilermaker Shops to see the progress being made towards completion of the project. As you can see from the picture to the right, the exterior is being prepared for the future installation of glass windows.

Everything from ship boilers to torpedo tubes was once manufactured in this former industrial building. The heavy industrial character will remain; however, next year you'll find a growing array of great places to savor as well. Get excited about the Brewery by Neighborhood Restaurant Group, Buzz Bakery, Huey's 24/7 Diner, Austin Grill Express, be right burger, and Willie's Brew & Que coming to Forest City's Yards development.

Renovations to the historic building should be complete in the 3Q of 2012. Learn more at the Yards website

Green Feature: The Navy Yard's Solar Project

navy yard solarThe Navy has received approval to construct a 30kW solar parking canopy in the center of the 386 parking garage on the Washington Navy Yard.  The solar canopy is part of the Navy Yard's Net Zero Energy Demonstration project and will produce enough energy to power the base's Pass & I.D. office.  The project also included a ground source heat pump HVAC system, LED lighting, insulation, and electrochromic windows that change from clear to tinted based on the amount of sunlight.  When complete, building performance and energy generation information will be displayed in real time for the public to see inside the building's lobby.  The project is scheduled for completion at the end of 2011.

Faces of the Front: Susan Punnett, DC Family and Youth Initiative

SusanSusan Punnett is the Executive Director at DC Family and Youth Initiative (DCFYI). They moved into the Capitol Riverfront last April, to the Forest City's Building 74.  As a new non-profit, they work to create enriching lifetime relationships for youth at risk of aging out of foster care. They make a difference in the lives of older children by forging pathways to adoption while building bridges between youth and a community of adults willing to open their hearts and homes.

DCFYI facilitates events that help break down inhibitions and grow relationships between children and adults by creating a comfortable environment where relationships can flourish. Susan said, "The events are where it all start, but the core of what we do is recruiting adults."

Before becoming the Family and Youth Initiative, this group operated as the Weekend Miracles program of Kidsave International, funded by a five year Adoption Opportunities grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. When Kidsave closed Weekend Miracles DC, we created Family and Youth Initiative to keep the program going and build on what we had begun. In the beginning, DCFYI operated as a project of Kidsave while we organized and built our new, independent organization. They continued to run events and recruit and match adults with teens without any interruption during the transition from Kidsave to DCFYI. Susan added,"We welcome everyone to learn more about DCFYI and to get involved or support the work we do with vulnerable teens who are also young people with incredible potential and promise."

Susan said, "For a lot of these kids, there isn't anybody they trust that can be that adult, nurturing voice that they will know will be there forever. Think of how most of us get through the issues of everyday life, like the first time you have a tough job. Without someone that can help you get through it, might not get through it."

For DCFYI, being in the Capitol Riverfront is good because it is close to the Metro's Green Line, which is accessible to volunteers. Personally, Susan loves being able to walk over to YP summer concerts, and seeing the neighborhood change. She said, "There's not many places in the city where you can appreciate how beautiful the river really is, and I love being by the river."
