Yards Park ranks #16 in Top 100 Public Spaces in the U.S and Canada

The Project for Public Spaces (PPS) and Planetizen released rankings this month for the Top 100 Public Spaces in the U.S. & Canada. In this ranking, the public was offered a unique opportunity to crowd-source their favorite public spaces. This Top 100 list was fueled by a passion for place.

So while long-time favorites like Central Park in New York and Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia made the list, many smaller, neighborhood public spaces topped them in the rankings thanks to passionate votes from locals.

The Yards Park came in at an impressive #16 among the Top 100 Public Spaces, highlighting the city of DC's local passion for the Yards Park-- the fountains, the Great Lawn, the boardwalk, and the Park's uniquely designed spaces.

Capitol Riverfront Community Planting Day

On Sunday, October 30th, the Capitol Riverfront BID and US Green Building Council National Capital Region partnered to plant thousands of daffodil bulbs and liriope ground cover throughout the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. Thank you to our volunteers who helped beautify the tree boxes, Metro plaza, and open spaces in the Capitol Riverfront.

Thanks to our sponsors CSX, Frager's Hardware, William C. Smith + Co., ALKS, and the JBG Companies who helped make this event possible.

Faces of the Front: Vicki Johnston, Velocity Condominiums

Vicki Johnston is the Sales Manager for Velocity Condominiums. Developed and built by the Cohen Companies--which has over 40 years of experience in the DC metro area--Velocity Condominiums is one of the neighborhood's premiere residential buildings. The 200-unit building opened in 2009.

Having joined Velocity in 2007, as a licensed real estate agent, Vicki shares a continued passion for the neighborhood: "I really believe in the future of this neighborhood and know everyone who has chosen to be a part of it from the early stages will benefit. I have sold to and worked with so many amazing people that all share the same philosophy of sacrificing a little now for big rewards later on. Putting down roots early and waiting for restaurants, shops and services to arrive isn't always easy, but now things are really moving down here."

Vicki attributes the momentum and progress in the Capitol Riverfront to the many people with whom she has worked, from the BID to developers: "They are focused and have a vision for this area as well as a plan. Even more importantly they continually demonstrate the ability to bend and flex when challenges and opportunities arise. In my experience that is always a recipe for success."

The BID in particular, Vicki notes, has facilitated the many successes in the Capitol Riverfront: "We would not be where we are without the BID. The groundwork the BID has laid for the neighborhood is invaluable. I would not have been able to do my job without them."

Noting how the Capitol Riverfront is flush with offerings like the Yards Park and advantages like transportation accessibility and walkability, Vicki has seen the neighborhood grow over the past several years into a vibrant destination in Washington:  "Being close to the water and walking along the river is just relaxing and gives you the best of both worlds while living in a bustling city."  And her favorite spot?  The Velocity Condominium rooftop, with incredible views of the neighborhood and the riverfront.

As for what's next in the Capitol Riverfront, Vicki adds that "the next year is really shaping up...it will take everything to a new level for residents, businesses and visitors."
