Happy New Year! What a difference a year makes. The Capitol Riverfront BID celebrates the many notable moments that took place in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood during 2015. Take a look at our year in review...
JANUARY

The BID held its
8th Annual Meeting & State of the Capitol Riverfront Luncheon on Thursday, January 22nd, at Nationals Park to celebrate the ongoing accomplishments in the neighborhood. In his keynote address, former DC Office of Planning Director Andy Altman discussed the changes that have swept the Capitol Riverfront in the past years and will continue to transform the neighborhood over the next decade.

The BID also unveiled the new Capitol Riverfront marketing video, which reflects the growth, access, and dynamic energy of the neighborhood.

The inaugural Ice Yards at The Yards brought the ski chalet vibes and over 2,000 people to the Capitol Riverfront on a winter day with ice sculptures and ice bars, a frosty beer garden, live music, outdoor fire pits, and virtual skiing, among other wintry activities.
FEBRUARY

With Forest City Washington's announcement that the renowned, DC-born and based menswear purveyor Hugh and Crye would open at the Boilermaker Shops in The Yards, the Capitol Riverfront welcomed the neighborhood's first clothing retailer.

The JBG Companies
acquired several large parcels on Half Street, SE currently home to the Fairgrounds, accompanying JBG's future apartment tower 
at 1244 South Capitol Street, SE.
Englewood LLC began construction on the 195-room Homewood Suites by Hilton at 50 M Street, SE, located one block from Nationals Park, which will include 5,000 SF of ground floor retail.

Five months after acquiring land at N Street, SE and Half Street, SE, Jair Lynch Development Partners and MacFarlane Partners filed plans to revive the Half Street land across from Nationals Park with mixed-use development.

The Capitol Riverfront was named "DC's Fastest Growing Neighborhood" by Bisnow DC.
APRIL

Toll Brothers celebrated the opening of Parc Riverside, located at 1011 First Street, SE, and popular Korean fried-chicken chain Bonchon Chicken opened at 1015 Half Street, SE.

The Washington Nationals celebrated Opening Day with news that the 2018 MLB All-Star Game will be held at Nationals Park in the Capitol Riverfront.

Grosvenor Americas in partnership with McCaffery Interests celebrated the groundbreaking of new mixed-use development F1RST and hotel Marriott Residence Inn at First and M Streets, SE, as well as signed retailers Taylor Gourmet and Chop't Creative Salad Co; and Monument Realty announced the development of the new National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) headquarters facility at One M Street, SE.

Yards Park was named one of the "2015 Best Outdoor Venues" in the Washington City Paper's Best of DC Reader Poll!

The 
5th Annual Friday Night Summer Concert Series kicked off in Yards Park, and Tour de Fat was back in Yards Park with bikes, brews, bemusement, and over 9,000 attendees.

Greystar Real Estate Partners, Ivanhoe Cambridge, and RCP Development Company held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the construction of ORE 82, a new mixed-use development.

Nationals fans and Capitol Riverfront residents cheered about pop-up barbecue with Hill Country Barbecue's new pop-up barbecue sandwich shop dubbed The Home Stand at 1244 South Capitol Street, SE, the future site of a mixed-use apartment by The JBG Companies.

For th
e second year in a row, jazz fans from across the nation gathered in Yards Park to enjoy the river view, taste cuisine from local vendors, and hear DC JazzFest presenting the finest artists in modern jazz on the Capitol Riverfront stage.

The interest in current development along the Anacostia Riverfront was prominent at "On the Waterfront," Bisnow's most popular event in history that featured a panel representing development projects in the Capitol Riverfront. BID president Michael Steven's opening phrase "water is magic" echoed among the panelists, who discussed their perspectives on neighborhood development.

DC Water, provider of drinking water and wastewater treatment services throughout DC, Maryland, and Virginia, submitted plans to the DC Zoning Commission to build a new $55 million headquarters in the Capitol Riverfront.

Banfield Pet Hospital 
opened at Twelve12, 1212 4th Street, SE, 
offering a wide variety of pet health services for furry friends in the neighborhood.

Forest City Washington announced the lease signing of Showplace Icon Theater, the first new cinema complex to be developed in southeast DC located on N Place, SE, one block east of the Washington Nationals' ballpark.

As construction continued on DC Water's Anacostia River Tunnels project, part of the Clean Rivers Project, there was a milestone to celebrate! DC Water's Tunnel Boring Machine "Lady Bird" was lifted from approximately 100 feet underground last after digging 4 1/2 miles over the past 2 years in the Anacostia River tunnel system. When completed, this project together with combine sewer overflow (CSO) control projects already completed or underway are expected to reduce CSOs to the Anacostia River by about 98 percent.
AUGUST

The Capitol Riverfront welcomed two new restaurants, Scarlet Oak and Due South, which both opened in August.

Van Ness Elementary School re-opened to two 16-seat preschool classes, two 20-seat pre-kindergarten classes and two 22-seat kindergarten classes for the 2015-2016 school year. The school will introduce 1st grade in the 2016-2017 school year.

Forest City Washington announced that popular locally-based running store Pacers Running and growing San Francisco-based coffee shop Philz Coffee would open at The Yards.

Akridge and Brandywine Realty Trust announced an agreement to develop a 275,000 SF office building on the land located at 25 M Street, SE, on the corner of Half Street and M Street, SE.
SEPTEMBER

Ziaafat Grill & Restaurant, a new Indian-Pakistani eatery, opened at 1102 8th Street, SE.

Skanska USA Commercial Development broke ground on their 11-story Class A office building at 99 M Street, SE and announced that CIRCA, a bistro owned by Metropolitan Hospitality Group, will be the first retail tenant at 99M.

Forest City Washington announced that Brooklyn Winery, the popular urban winery based in New York City, will open District Winery at The Yards in a new building to be developed at the north edge of Yards Park at the corner of Water and Fourth Streets, SE.

Monument Realty announced plans for a residential project located at 10 Van Street, SE, one block north of Nationals Park.
OCTOBER

The Capitol Riverfront Marketing Video received a Silver Excellence in Economic Development Award from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and a Downtown Merit Award from the International Downtown Association (IDA) in the category of Marketing and Communication.

Pacers Running officially opened its fifth DC area location in the Boilermaker shops at The Yards..

NOVEMBER

MRP Realty and Florida Rock Development celebrated the topping out of their mixed-use project
Dock 79, located at 79 Potomac Avenue, SE.

Popular restaurant and sports bar Buffalo Wild Wings opened its first DC location in the Capitol Riverfront and offered free wings for a year to the first 100 guests!

Forest City Washington and Bellingham Marine Industries began construction of The Yards Marina on the Anacostia River in front of Yards Park. With 52 boat slips in multiple finger piers, the marina will feature a water taxi dock, a paddler dock for kayakers and other human-powered watercraft, and an education dock for use with river-focused experiential instruction.
DECEMBER

The Capitol Riverfront BID presented the 2nd Annual 
PARCEL Market at Canal Park, which lighted the park's three blocks with holiday cheer among the 10,000 square-foot ice rink, cozy fire pits, interactive art installations, and a festive showcase of DC's emerging talent in retail, food, art, and musical entertainment.

The Capitol Riverfront also featured the 1st Annual Holiday Tree in the southern block of Canal Park that was decorated by residents and illuminated during PARCEL Market with a live performance by Dupont Brass Band.

The 168-room Hampton Inn & Suites opened at the intersection of 1st Street, SE and N Street, SE.
