BernardFaces of the Front: Bernard White with the Capitol Riverfront Clean & Safe Team
Clean & Safe Team member Bernard White celebrates his 5 year anniversary as an employee in the Capitol Riverfront this fall. Bernard began working in the Capitol Riverfront as a security guard in Yards Park and joined the Clean & Safe Team in 2013.

Bernard is now a Clean & Safe team supervisor, setting an excellent example for new team members and helping neighborhood residents and visitors on a daily basis. "As one of the original security guards in Yards Park Bernard has been an exemplary employee and friend to the park," said BID president Michael Stevens. "He has been a model of responsibility, dedication and friendly service, and we are glad he is part of the BID team."  Read on and get to know a little more about Bernard!

As a Clean & Safe team supervisor, you spend a good bit of time outdoors throughout the Capitol Riverfront. What is your favorite outdoor spot in the neighborhood?

I enjoy Yards Park because it has everything you need: food, fun, tranquility, and nature.

LadyBirdDC Water's Tunnel Boring Machine "Lady Bird" Completes Drilling
As construction continues on DC Water's Anacostia River Tunnels project, part of the Clean Rivers Project, there is a milestone to celebrate! DC Water's Tunnel Boring Machine "Lady Bird" was lifted from approximately 100 feet underground last Thursday, July 23rd, after digging 4 1/2 miles over the past 2 years in the Anacostia River tunnel system.

The Anacostia River Tunnels project is designed to capture and provide storage for combined sewer overflows (CSOs) being discharged to the Anacostia River. When completed, this project together with CSO control projects already completed or underway are expected to reduce CSOs to the Anacostia River by about 98 percent.

DC Water's TBM was named "Lady Bird" after Claudia Alta "Lady Bird" Johnson, First Lady and wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson who made it her mission to preserve and protect the environment. In 1964 she formed The Committee for a More Beautiful Capital, whose positive contributions are still visible today.
