VanNessFaces of the Front: Cynthia Robinson-Rivers with Van Ness Elementary
Van Ness Elementary School will open its doors in the Capitol Riverfront to 3 and 4 year old Pre-K and Kindergarten students this fall. We sat down with Head of School Cynthia Robinson-Rivers to discuss her passion for education, plans for the growth of Van Ness, and her favorite places in the Capitol Riverfront.

Ms. Robinson-Rivers previously served as assistant principal at Seaton Elementary School in Shaw, director of DC Public Schools' Teacher Recognition and Retention program, and as a classroom teacher in California and Washington, DC.

Ms. Robinson-Rivers invites the Capitol Riverfront community to the Van Ness Elementary School Grand Reopening Celebration on Monday, August 31st from 8:15 am to 8:45 am. 

How would you describe the Capitol Riverfront to friends and visitors?
The combination of natural beauty, thoughtful landscape design, and easy access to great restaurants and public transportation make it an amazing part of town to live and work.



PacersPhilzPacers Running & Philz Coffee to Open in the Capitol Riverfront
Two more great new retailers are now set to open in the Capitol Riverfront! Forest City Washington, developer of The Yards, has announced that Pacers Running, a popular, locally-based runners resource store will open in October in the Boilermaker Shops at 300 Tingey Street, SE; and Philz Coffee, a growing San Francisco-based coffee shop, will open in Arris, now under construction, in spring 2016.

With the announcement of Pacers, the Boilermaker Shops' retail component is now fully leased. The Yards is the sixth DC-area location for Pacers.

Philz Coffee at The Yards is a part of the company's plan to establish multiple locations in the DC metro area, their first expansion market outside of California. The store entrance will be on Tingey Street across from the Boilermaker Shops.

BrandywineAkridge & Brandywine Realty Trust to Develop 25 M Street
Akridge and Brandywine Realty Trust have announced an agreement to develop a 275,000 SF office building on the land located at 25 M Street, SE, on the corner of Half Street and M Street, SE in the Capitol Riverfront. The property is directly across from the Navy Yard Metro Station and one block from Nationals Park.

Architectural firm HOK will design 25 M Street to create a landmark presence at one of the most visible intersections in Washington, DC. Designed to the highest level of sustainability, 25 M will boast a full host of amenities including a large, modern lobby, a 3,000 square foot fitness facility, and a rooftop terrace with views of Nationals Park. It will also offer 25,000 square feet of street-level retail, dining, and entertainment in a premier location.

Thursday, August 13: Paddle along the Anacostia River at Anacostia Watershed Society's Paddle Night! Join AWS at the Ballpark Boathouse - Diamond Teague Park from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm for free canoeing (RSVP required), and head to Ballpark Boathouse any day throughout the weekend for a canoe or kayak rental and fun on the river! 
Capitol Riverfront Outdoor Movies continue with The Goonies 
in the northern block of Canal Park at 8:30 pm. Bring your blanket as early as 7:00 pm to enjoy the Popped! Republic gourmet popcorn truck, plenty of neighborhood options for your picnic basketand your favorite stars beneath our stars. Catch a Zumba workout in Yards Park with VIDA Fitness at 7:00 pm before the movie begins!

Friday, August 14: Start the weekend off at a High Energy Fitness Class with DCBFIT at 6:30 am in Yards Park. Bring the family to free Friday Night Fishing with Anacostia Riverkeeper and Earth Conservation Corps at Diamond Teague Park from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm; then jam out to pop hits cover band Jeff from Accounting at the Friday Night Concert from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in Yards Park. Concert-goers are encouraged to arrive early with their picnic dinners, blankets, and take out meals from Capitol Riverfront restaurants to enjoy a free evening of music! The Zac Brown Band hits the Nationals Park stage with Avett Brothers at 7:00 pm, and tickets are still available.

Saturday, August 15:  Keep up your summer fitness goals and try Bootcamp with DCBFIT at Canal Park at 8:30 am! Meet artists from the Wondaland Records crew in Yards Park from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm, brought to you by Toyota. Listen to the new EP and win tickets to the EephusTour! Bluejacket's new Bottle Shop & Tasting Room will hold its grand opening from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm to cap off DC Beer Week.

Sunday, August 16: Join VIDA Fitness for Puppy Yoga in Yards Park at 5:00 pm!

BluejacketGrand Opening of Bluejacket's Bottle Shop & Tasting Room August 15
Bluejacket's new Bottle Shop & Tasting Room, located adjacent to the brewery and restaurant, will hold its grand opening this Saturday, August 15th, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm to cap off DC Beer Week.

Visit the renovated space, sample classic, vintage and rare Bluejacket brews on draft, and shop the expanded bottle selection. For this special occasion, the Bluejacket brewing team is busy bottling the season's best suds, some of which have never been released including Whiskey Barrel-Aged Mexican Radio. There will at least 20 different Bluejacket brews available by the bottle, and 6 brews on draft in the Bottle Shop & Tasting Room.


YogaPuppy Yoga with VIDA Fitness August 16 in Yards Park
Join VIDA Fitness during the Dog Days of Summer for Puppy Yoga!

Grab your yoga mat and canine friend, and head to Yards Park this Sunday, August 16th at 5:00 pm for a sunset vinyasa yoga class presented by VIDA, Unleashed by Petco, Banfield Pet Hospital, and Spoil Me Rotten Dog Biscuit Company.

Owners and pups will enjoy yoga, treats, games, and dog ice cream. Non puppy owners welcome!

Do you have a favorite Capitol Riverfront store or restaurant? Nominate them for a Hilly Award! The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce will host the 2015 Hilly Awards Gala on November 7th this year, and they are now taking nominations for the awards through September 20th.

VisionZeroHelp Make DC Streets Safer & Register Your Feedback with Vision Zero
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, along with more than 20 District agencies, recently committed to Vision Zero, an initiative to create safer streets in Washington, DC.

The commitment is part of Mayor Bowser's response to the US Department of Transportation's Mayor's Challenge for Safer People and Safer Streets, which aims to improve pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety by showcasing effective local actions, empowering local leaders to take action, and promoting partnerships to advance pedestrian and bicycle safety.
