Urban Design Framework Plan and Retail Analysis Study
The Capitol Riverfront BID has selected the planning and design firm AECOM to prepare an Urban Design Framework Plan for our 500-acre neighborhood. The Plan will examine the quality of the public realm in the BID and develop strategies for a comprehensive framework and public investment plan in the right-of-way.
The plan will also address better connections between sub-areas of the neighborhood; how M Street should look and feel, especially if a streetcar line is introduced; how to enhance gateways into the neighborhood; temporary plantings and activities for vacant parcels; a hierarchy of streets and how they should look and function; and how private architecture can best respond to site and public realm conditions.
The BID has also contracted with Streetsense to conduct a Retail Analysis Study of the Capitol Riverfront that will provide forecasts on future retail demand and absorption possibilities. The study will give us direction on future retail attraction efforts by BID staff, as well as how retail storefronts and mix of retail uses can enhance the public realm. It is anticipated that both projects will be completed by year's end.

A Closer Look at Canal Park

Located in the heart of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, Canal Park stretches across three city blocks and features Xavier Cervera's Park Tavern restaurant, an ice rink, monumental fountains and sculptures, and a rain garden.
We would also like to make a correction to the lead story in the July 19, 2012 edition of the Front Page News. STUDIOS Architecture designed the Canal Park pavilions and restaurant. STUDIOS led the design and fabrication of the Canal Park mini golf hole model at National Building Museum, in conjunction with OLIN.

Final Front Flicks Tonight!
The Capitol Riverfront BID Front Flicks outdoor movie series will conclude tonight at sundown/8:45 pm with The Da Vinci Code. The movie is a rain make-up date from July 19th. It will be screened at Tingey Plaza just one block from the Navy Yard Metro (New Jersey Avenue exit) behind the U.S. Department of Transportation building.
Popped! Republic gourmet popcorn food truck will also be at tonight's movie with several flavors of popcorn for the audience to enjoy.

Bank of America Now Open
A new Bank of America branch is now open in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood at 55 M Street, SE. This branch is the first tenant to occupy the building located on top of the west entrance of the Navy Yard Metro station.
The bank is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and will have ATM services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Welcome to the neighborhood, Bank of America!

DC Public Schools Annual Beautification Day
Donate your time on Saturday, August 25th from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm to help beautify public schools in the District. Established in 2005, Beautification Day serves as a citywide clean-up for all public school buildings in preparation for the first day of school.
Efforts will include landscaping, trash pick-up, light painting, planting flowers, setting up classrooms, creating leveled book rooms, and more. DC Public Schools (DCPS) are looking for over 3,500 volunteers from every neighborhood in the city to ensure that schools are ready and welcoming for children. Here's how you can help:
--Register to volunteer at a school. DCPS will provide the supplies, water and a t-shirt.
--Serve as a site manager.
--Download a flyer and spread the word.

Brazilian Band at Yards Park this Friday
This Friday's Yards Park Evening Concert Series features Brazilian band Alma Tropicalia from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Local food and beverages will be provided by STIX food truck, Red Apron Butchery, Buzz Bakery, and Churchkey.
Sunday is Family Day at the Half Street Fairgrounds. Bring the kids from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm to enjoy carnival games, inflatable rides, live children's entertainment and more at no charge.
The Washington Nationals take on the Miami Marlins this weekend on Friday at 4:05 pm and at 7:35 pm, Saturday at 7:05 pm, and Sunday at 1:35 pm. Come out to the Capitol Riverfront to cheer on the Nats!

New Southbound DC 295 Ramp to 11th Street Bridge Now Open
Earlier this week, Mayor Vincent Gray opened a ramp from southbound DC 295
to the inbound 11th Street Bridge that will decrease travel times for commuters, reduce cut-through traffic on local streets and further efforts to generate a sustainable, first-rate waterfront in the District of Columbia.
The second ramp, connecting the outbound 11th Street Freeway Bridge to northbound DC 295 is scheduled to open this fall along with other new ramps connecting both directions of DC 295/Interstate 295 with the project's third, or local, bridge.
The new DC 295 southbound ramp is projected to carry 34,000 cars per day by the year 2030 with the northbound ramp is projected to carry 37,500 cars daily.
