Opening Next Week: Pedestrian Bridge Connects Riverwalk Trail

November 22, 2011 marks the opening of a

brand new pedestrian bridge that connects Diamond Teague Park and the Yards Park.

This bridge connection creates a continuous 1-mile riverwalk trail that is publicly accessible within the Capitol Riverfront and connects to a larger trail system being developed along the Anacostia riverfront and throughout the District of Columbia.

Join city officials, Forest City Washington and local partners for a ribbon cutting to celebrate this terrific new riverfront connection on November 22 at 1:30pm at the bridge.

The Yards Park named one of America's Best New Parks

The Atlantic Monthly's Cities Blog has named the Yards Park one of the nation's best new parks. Citing the Yards Park as "one of the best and most contemporary public spaces in D.C. for years to come" the magazine lauds the park for its distinctive design, water features, as well its contribution to creating a unique neighborhood identity in the Capitol Riverfront.

The Yards Park was selected among a prestigious short list of new urban parks including The Highline (New York City), Olympic Sculpture Park (Seattle, WA) and CityGarden (St Louis, MO).

Last month, the Yards Park was ranked by Project for Public Spaces and Planetizen as #16 among the Top 100 Public Spaces in the U.S. & Canada.

Faces of the Front: John Palinski, BEST Kids Mentoring Program

BEST Kids is a volunteer mentoring organization located in the Capitol Riverfront that seeks to promote better futures for youth in DC's child welfare system by developing and supporting one-on-one mentoring relationships between the youth and caring, consistent adults. The program promotes early intervention and long-term, sustained commitment from its volunteer mentors.

BEST Kids moved into 515 M Street, SE in October of 2010. John Palinski from BEST Kids (pictured at right, with colleagues Emily Ernes, Cedric Loiseau, Nicole Harrison, Fria Wilson and Rachel Kohl) commented on how much the staff enjoys the Yards Park and proximity to the Nationals' Stadium.

The Nationals Baseball team, he noted, kindly provided tickets for a BEST Kids teamwork session for mentors and mentees this past July, which was enjoyed by all.

John also noted that "the Capitol Riverfront area is an easy bike ride, drive or metro from the homes and schools of many of the youth in our program as well as the Child and Family Services Agency. BEST Kids office location also provides an excellent location for hosting mentor trainings."

The staff at BEST Kids is eagerly anticipating the addition of the Boilermaker Shops, providing new lunch and happy hour options, as well as the newly refurbished Foundry Lofts. John also shared that they are especially "pleased with the security and the friendliness" provided by the BID's hospitality ambassadors and clean & safe teams.

John encourages those of you interested in volunteering and mentoring local DC youth to contact BEST Kids for more information at http://www.bestkids.org.
