Capitol Riverfront Team at the Nationals Ballpark

natsThe Capitol Riverfront Team enjoyed the baseball game between the Washington Nationals and the Cincinnati Reds on August 16th. Thanks to Forest City Washington for allowing us to enjoy the game from their suite. The BID's Clean and Safe team, the Yards Park security team from Watkin's Security, and the BID office staff had a great time! After the fourth inning the Nationals came by the suite with Screech for photos and to show their appreciation to Eloyd Robinson from our Yards Park security team by giving him an autographed Ian Desmond jersey. Mr. Robinson was a member of the Negro League and played on professional teams including the Homestead Grays and Saskatoon Commodores, as well as the St. Louis Cardinals. The Nationals played well and won an entertaining game 6-4. Go Nats!

In addition, last Friday Clean and Safe team member William 'Smooth' Wardlaw sang the National Anthem at National's Ballpark. Will said, "It was an honor to be chosen to sing and be among the few that have had the opportunity. It was a big accolade." To learn more about his upcoming performances, check out his website  www.smoothsings.com.

Green Feature:  New Business Recycling Rules

recycleDid you know that the District of Columbia throws away 1,000,000 tons of trash every year? The fact that 70% of this trash is generated by non-residential, business sources has led DC to create new guidelines for commercial recycling. Recycling does more than reduce the amount of trash headed to landfills or incinerators, it is often cheaper to recycle, has less impact on our natural resources, and reduces the need for waste disposal facilities. Besides the fact that recycling is the law and failing to recycle can result in hefty fines, good recycling practices can enhance the image of the workplace.

There are a couple of things you should know about recycling. First off, you should be aware of the practices in your apartment and office. Many locations participate in single stream recycling, where different recyclable materials can be mixed together. But if you do not have that option, you should separate your paper, metal, glass and plastic containers. Second, your recyclables should be cleaned and rinsed. If items are contaminated, they can sometimes create circumstances where large batches must be moved to the trash. Also, plastic bags are not acceptable alternatives to rigid recycling containers, so put your recyclable materials inside the container at your point of pick-up.  There are other new rules about recycling here. So stay up to date with the standards, and do your part to separate your recycling.
