"Rivers of the World" Art Exhibition featured in Yards Park

Take a stroll along the Yards Park Boardwalk to explore a vibrant new artwork display entitled "Rivers of the World." Students from 15 countries, and representing 208 schools, worked with artists to create artwork inspired by the study of their city's river or that of a sister city. DC's Anacostia River is one of the rivers featured in this project.

These unique artwork panels were first exhibited along London's south bank riverside walkway, and will be a moving exhibition that is featured along waterfronts all over the world.

Be sure to check these out along the Yards Park boardwalk and learn about our own Anacostia River as well as rivers from around the world. The artwork panels will be on display through February 2012.

Riverwalk Pedestrian Bridge Opens

On November 22, 2011, Mayor Vincent Gray, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, George Hawkins of DC Water, and Deborah Ratner Salzberg of Forest City Washington, among many other Capitol Riverfront neighbors celebrated the opening of a brand new pedestrian bridge connecting Diamond Teague Park and the Yards Park.

The Racing Presidents from Nationals Ballpark arrived at the event in style, and took the inaugural first stroll across the new pedestrian bridge!

This bridge connection creates a continuous 1-mile riverwalk trail that is publicly accessible within the Capitol Riverfront and connects to a larger trail system being developed along the Anacostia riverfront and throughout the District of Columbia.

Harris Teeter Site Work to Begin in the Capitol Riverfront

Having successfully secured its final permits, Forest City is ready to begin initial site mobilization this week at 4th and M Streets, SE, on a 225-unit apartment building, 50,000 square foot Harris Teeter grocery store, and a 30,000 square foot health club, a pivotal project in a series of developments for The Yards.

The full-service Harris Teeter grocery store (scheduled to open in 2013) will offer fresh
grocery and shopping selections and will provide outstanding convenience for residents, visitors and businesses alike.

The development of this mixed-use project is another step in a series of important developments in The Yards that will provide amenities, goods and services that will benefit the entire Capitol Riverfront and adjacent neighborhoods.

Up Top and In the Front: DC's Green Roof Rebate Program

US DOT green roof

DC's Green Roof Rebate Program is currently accepting applications for the District's new green roof rebate program for residential, commercial and institutional properties in the District. The program provides $5 for every square foot of planted area and are available for both new and existing buildings. Green roofs yield lower utility bills, increase property values and improve both air and water quality.

You don't have to look far in the Capitol Riverfront to find one of DC's Green Roof showcase projects. The US DOT building at 1200 New Jersey Ave, SE, which was built and is managed by JBG Companies features a 68,000 square foot green roof (pictured here).

The Green Roof Rebate Program is administered by the Anacostia Watershed Society. To apply, visit their Green Roofs webpage or call 202-557-5814 for more information.

Faces of the Front: Alfred Corbin, Yards Park Operations Manager

You've probably seen him in Yards Park, and if you haven't yet you will soon! Alfred Corbin is a member of the Capitol Riverfront BID team, and is also our "Face in the Park," overseeing operations and maintenance in Yards Park.

Alfred joined the Capitol Riverfront BID in August 2011 after serving as the Operations Manager at the Georgetown BID, and working on water systems management for the Arlington County Department of Public Works. These experiences led him to the Capitol Riverfront, where he now oversees Yards Park landscaping, water features,  maintenance contracts, and partnering with the BID's Clean and Safe Team on a variety of projects. As Alfred says with a smile, his job is "a walk in the park every day."

Alfred works closely with Kathleen Kruczlnicki at the BID who serves as Manager of Yards Park Programming and Marketing. After a successful first season of Yards Park events that brought in over 60,000 visitors to the park, and awards from The Atlantic and the Project for Public Space, there is much to look forward next spring in Yards Park--from evening concerts, to music and food festivals, to exercise classes, there is a host of exciting events planned for the 2012 season.

Next time you're strolling through Yards Park be sure to say hello to Alfred and thank him for his day-to-day stewardship of Yards Park. And if you're already brainstorming about a terrific spring event in Yards Park be sure to contact Kathleen to start planning all the details!
