Front Page News Fall 2011 Update Available

  • Nine new restaurants opening in 2012
  • 95% of the apartments are leased in the Front
  • 120 events occurred in the first year of the Yards Park 
  • The Front is home to more than 35,000 daytime employees in the nearly seven million SF of office.

Anacostia River Business Summit Tuesday, September 20th

This week's Anacostia River Business Summit was a great success. Attendees listened to three panels discuss the Anacostia River, networked and viewed 23 green innovators, environmental non-profits and public agencies expo displays. Over 314 people registered for the event. The summit brought together an informed set of panelists. The speakers for this event included Jeff Corbin from the US EPA, former Mayor Anthony Williams, George Hawkins & Carlton Ray of DC Water, Christophe Tulou of DDOE, Terry Bellamy from DDOT, Lisa Shroeder from Riverlife, and Jim Foster from the Anacostia Watershed Society. The panelists pointed to the importance of projects to clean up the Anacostia such as DC Water's $2.4 billion Clean Rivers Project already underway, as well as some other successful efforts along the river corridor. Capitol Riverfront Community Planting Day

cpd4 On Saturday, October 29th from 9:00 am till 12 noon, the Capitol Riverfront BID and the US Green Building Council National Capital Region are partnering to plant thousands of daffodil bulbs throughout the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood. RSVP here to join us in this effort to beautify the tree boxes and open spaces in the Capitol Riverfront. Volunteers should meet at the parking lot at M St. and 2nd St. SE. Coffee, juice, and breakfast provided. Thanks to our sponsors CSX, Frager's Hardware, William C. Smith + Co., ALKS, and the JBG Companies, who are helping to make this event possible.  

      

2011 WalkingTown & BikingTown Tours 

wtdcOn Tuesday, September 27, the Capitol Riverfront will participate in Cultural Tourism's WalkingTown tours. To attend the tour about the Maritime Heritage of the Capitol Riverfront and Yards Park meet outside the Navy Yard Metro station, New Jersey Ave exit at 12 noon. Tour will last about one hour.

During this tour learn about the development of the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood with a specific focus on the new 5.5 acre Yards Park's distinct industrial heritage. Visit historic buildings preserved for future adaptive reuse and learn about the design elements of the Yards Park. Hear how the site is transforming into a new community focused on sustainable development and riverfront renewal.

 

The 2011 WalkingTown DC and BikingTown DC is the largest event yet with more than 175 free guided walking and biking tours over ten days, September 23 - October 2, 2011, through all eight wards of Washington, DC. This newly expanded ten-day WalkingTown DC and BikingTown DC will feature more tours at more times with even more distinct ways to explore the city's neighborhoods. This year's event will include Happy Hour tours, Bite-Sized tours, special Civil War themed tours, bilingual tours offered in Spanish and English in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, a special launch party, bike clinics, and much more. Capitol Bikeshare Birthday in the Yards Park 

cbsCapital Bikeshare riders came out in full force for the Capital Bikeshare First Birthday Bash at the Yards Park on Thursday, September 22nd! Activities included  jousting and wrecking ball moonbounces, a paper boy toss bike ride, a photo booth, hula hooping, a demonstration by the Trapeze School, food trucks and free cupcakes from Sprinkles. Over 2,000 people attended the event and helped celebrate the successful first year of Capital Bikeshare. CaBi reached its 1 millionth ride on Wednesday, September 21, coincidentally on its actual birthday. See photos from the event here.

Blocktober Fest at the Yards Park - Rain or Shine

Enjoy a Bavarian tradition this year on September 24th in celebration of Blocktoberfest at The Yards Park. With multiple party bands and dj's, a lively traditional German oompah band, and food and beer, there will be activities for all ages. For more information please visit www.blocktoberfest.com.  

 

Before heading to Blocktoberfest be sure to visit the Barracks Row Fall Festival. The Fall Festival will feature a variety of activities like: a mussel throwdown, a variety of vendors, outdoor bars, a petting zoo, the military chefs' cook-off swing dancing and performers, and the Running Presidents. 

Upcoming Yards Parks Events  

bddcIn the Yards Park on Sunday, October 2, the District will celebrate Brazil! Welcomed by the Brazilian community of Greater-Washington, Brazil Day DC is a cultural extravaganza that is certain to emerge as one of the most talked about Brazilian festivals in the country. Produced in partnership by the Amazonia Harvest Foundation and the Brazilian Consulate of Washington DC, the festival boasts an empowering mission to bring forth the best the Brazilian community of Greater Washington has to offer and shine a spotlight on talented Brazilian performers, vendors, exhibitors and organizations that call the DC region home. Their performances will range from Jazz, Samba, Bossa Nova, Frevo and MPB, to various traditional and regional Dances. There will also be floor demonstrations from local schools of Capoeira and Jiu-Jitsu. Admission is free!  

Fireworks at Baseball Game Tonight! 

ballThe Washington Nationals will conclude Fan Appreciation Month with a FAN-tastic FANale Weekend. NATS FANale Weekend will include concessions specials and giveaways. All fans will also have the opportunity to win a variety of surprise giveaways, including Nationals game-used merchandise, autographed items from Nationals players, and valuable gift cards and experiences donated by sponsors. Tonight, September 23rd after the game against the Atlanta Braves, fireworks will be presented by Miller Lite post-game. Visit their website for more information.  

Arts Festival in Southwest DC 

swdcartsBetween Friday September 23rd and Sunday September 25th, the first annual SW ArtsFest will happen a short walk away from the Capitol Riverfront. Various venues in Southwest, DC will feature ten different organizations presenting a cross-section of Southwest's cultural community through a three-day festival with the theme "Discover Southwest."  The collaboration will include the (e)merge art fair and the Marcâtus Creative Art Market, performances and children's activities at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, the 10th Annual DC Jazz Preservation Festival, the Human Rights Film Festival, an outdoor art studio for children, and much more.
