Guts Gore and Glory: Shipboard Surgery in 1812
This new program is designted to bring bite-sized pieces of naval history and heritage to the enlisted community. Each month's program will focus on a different topic in naval history through gallery talks and examination of artifacts in the Navy Museum (without lectures or Power Point!). December's Block 39 Guts Gore and Glory: Shipboard Surgery in 1812 will investigate common injuries and illnesses (broken bones, scurvy and constipation) and the medical practices that help to treat them (castor oil and amputation) before the knoledge of germ theory. Attendees will be able to hold various replica instruments from the time period including bone saws,amputation knives and toot keys. While designed to assist the enlisted community with the Block 39 requirement, all members of the general public and greater US NAval community are welcome to attend.
