Carey and Thomas Dougan moved to the Capitol Riverfront in 2005 and have enjoyed living, working, and playing in the neighborhood ever since. Having owned at Capitol Hill Tower, the Dougans bought a house at EYA's Capitol Quarter as their family grew. Thomas is employed at the Washington Navy Yard, and both he and Carey are instructors at Trapeze School New York in The Yards. In fact, their children Eve (age 10) and Ben (age 8) spend so much time at the Trapeze School that they have been dubbed the (trapeze) "rig rats!"
The Capitol Riverfront could be described as fun and quirky. Not only is there a baseball stadium, a trapeze school and an ice skating rink, we get to see giant laser cats and our very own neighborhood sideshow.
The most significant change we’ve have seen is the number of people walking on the sidewalks. There are so many reasons to be outside exploring the neighborhood; and we see neighbors, visitors passing through to head to Yards Park, or fans on their way to a Nationals baseball game.
We love grabbing a few delicious sandwiches to go from Cornercopia and having a picnic at Canal Park or Yards Park.
Friday nights are marked off on the calendar all summer long for the summer concert series at Yards Park. We keep our bag packed with towels and picnic blankets so we can join our friends for a relaxing evening with whatever live band will be taking the stage.
As a circus family, we are big fans of Side Yards. Magicians, sword swallowers, contortionists, jugglers...what's not to love!
Ice skating is our favorite holiday activity. We can walk down to the rink and spend an hour or we can turn it into an afternoon with a group of friends.
