The return of baseball season comes at last! The Washington Nationals are kicking off their home season this year with 5,000 fans (safely socially distanced, of course) ready to watch them face off against the New York Mets on Thursday, April 1 at 7:09 pm. Even if you weren’t one of the lucky ones to snag a ticket this time around, there’s still plenty of ways to celebrate opening day in Capitol Riverfront.
Head Out On a Hunt
In honor of the return of action at the ballpark the CapRiv BID is putting on the Inaugural HOMErun Scavenger Hunt! Everyone's favorite inflatable baseballs will be located throughout the neighborhood, and can be found with clues along the way. The hunt will kick off with the first clue and game rules posted on @capitolriverfront's Instagram handle at noon on Thursday, April 1. Follow the clues at each of the 6 baseball locations that will lead to the final "homeplate" baseball. Snap a photo in front of the homeplate baseball (and its location); post on your Instagram story and tag @capitolriverfront; and you'll be entered to win one of three $100 gift cards to a favorite pregame/postgame restaurant in the neighborhood!
Go Old School and See A Drive-In Movie
Celebrate the start of blossoms and baseball season with an outdoor, drive-in movie with your friends and family. The Capitol Riverfront BID, Washington Nationals, and the National Cherry Blossom Festival have teamed up to bring drive-in movies back to Buzzard Point just in time for Opening Day weekend. The Blossoms + Baseball Drive-In Pop-Up Movie Series will feature “42" and “A League of Their Own” on Friday, April 2 and Saturday, April 3 at 7:30 pm down at The Stacks. It’s not baseball without hot dogs! The Swizzler food truck will make an appearance on Saturday so you can get your hands on a gourmet dog. Plus, all proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Living Classrooms Foundation.
