Letter to the Community about Canal Basin in Yards Park

To our neighbors and visitors to the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood,

We recognize that the use of the water basin at Yards Park has caused some confusion over the years, particularly as it has often been used informally as a wading pool. We acknowledge that past communications have been unclear and that there have been inconsistencies in conveying the basin’s intended purpose.

We apologize for the inconsistencies and miscommunications and recognize the need for clearer information. As we move forward, we are clarifying our communication about the intended use of the basin to better align with safety standards and long-term maintenance goals. While policies for the basin are set by two DC agencies, Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) and Department of Health (DOH), our organization is committed to being a strong partner in helping ensure those policies are communicated clearly and consistently.

To support this change, we are updating our website content, replacing outdated photos, and posting clear, consistent policies to ensure the public has accurate information about how the space should be used.

We are grateful to our neighbors, families, and friends who bring the Capitol Riverfront to life – whether you are here for the food, the fun, or the fresh air. We look forward to welcoming you to the neighborhood soon.
