The Fredrick Douglass Bridge was lowered in 2008 and now meets Potomac Avenue, SE in an at-grade intersection that allows right turns onto Potomac Avenue in front of Nationals Park. South Capitol Street will continue to be renovated as a grand, urban boulevard, culminating in the construction of a new Douglass Memorial Bridge and elliptical traffic circle that will serve as open space for future monuments and memorials. Construction of the new bridge is targeted to begin as early as late 2014 or 2015 with completion targeted in 2018. More information can be viewed here.
