Here in the Capitol Riverfront neighborhood, we like to say that "the porch light is always on." Despite the federal government shutdown, there are still a variety of restaurants and attractions for all to enjoy including specials for government employees.
While several museums in DC have been forced to close during the shutdown, here are some fun attractions in Capitol Riverfront to check out.
The National Museum of the U.S. Navy at the Washington Navy Yard is still open 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday. The museum is open to the public, but according to the museum website, visitors without a military ID must check in at the Visitor Control Center (VCC) at the primary access gate at 11th and O Streets SE (GPS address is 1022 O Street SE, Washington, DC). The VCC is open weekdays, 6:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m.
As DC public parks, the world-class Yards Park and Canal Park are always free and open to the public.
In fact, Canal Park Ice Rink remains open with the following hours: Sunday 10:00 am - 10:00 pm; Monday - Thursday 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm; Friday 12:00 pm - 11:00 pm; and Saturday 10:00 am - 11:00 pm.
The Capitol Riverfront retail community feels government employees' pain, and are offering a list of specials for those days when you just can't stay cooped up inside any longer.
District Winery will offer Half Price Tastings at the Tasting Bar & Half Price Bottles at the Bar in Restaurant Ana weekdays with a Government ID.
During the shutdown, Mission's specials include the following: $7 Mission Margarita, $5 El Jimador Silver, $5 16oz Dos Equis draft, & $8 Quesadilla (+$4 add protein). As a reminder, the Mexican spot always offers Taco Tuesdays - 2 tacos + pint of Estrella Jalisco draft $10.
Rasa is offering 25% off and All-Day Happy Hour with a Government ID through the duration of the shutdown.
Due South features Happy Hour pricing beginning at 2:00 pm for government employees.
The Big Stick is giving 18% off all food and $4 drafts/house wine/rails until 7:00 pm for all federal employees with ID.
