The Capitol Riverfront BID’s Clean Team is responsible for the day-to-day appearance of the neighborhood, creating a beautiful, clean and safe place to live, work, and play. As initially intended, since the Clean Team began operation eight years ago, their efforts have directly changed opinions of the neighborhood as seen in the BID’s annual perception survey and also from comments shared with the BID online.
The Clean Team is comprised of twelve full-time employees and up to eight seasonal employees. In addition to their impact on the sidewalks and streetscapes of the neighborhood, select Clean Team members staff Yards Park and Canal Park, as well as BID events – helping to create a vibrant atmosphere that showcases neighborhood amenities to visitors while also creating an inviting environment for residents and employees.
The ambassadors provide service seven days-a-week, 365 days-a-year, with extended hours during the busier spring and summer seasons. In 2015, the Clean Team removed more than 52,000 bags of trash over the course of the year. In service to the neighborhood, during the major snow storms of early 2016, the Clean Team dug out the neighborhood’s fire hydrants, bus stations, and crosswalks. The team also expanded walkways to ensure wheelchair accessibility.
The Capitol Riverfront Clean Team is part of a larger network of clean teams administered by the Capitol Hill BID and their Ready, Willing, and Working program. Through this network, the Clean Team members receive competitive salaries and a range of employer-provided benefits including health insurance and a retirement fund match.
